On September 22, 2021, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences launched orientation programs. Enrollment education is the first lesson for graduate students, and an important chapter to strengthen graduate education and training. To familiarize the 2021 class of graduate students with the new learning environment and relevant rules and regulations, help them set learning goals, and make life planning, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences carried out centralized enrollment education programs for them from September 26 to September 27. In the context of regular epidemic prevention and control, the two-day enrollment education programs were conducted both online and offline in Conference Room 508 of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
1. First lesson: understanding the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and envisioning a promising future
Professor Ma Jie, dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, started with a warm welcome to and sincere congratulations on the arrival of the 2021 class of graduate students. Mr. Ma then gave a detailed introduction of the history and outstanding talents of Jilin University as well as the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Mr. Ma asked all students three questions: What is the purpose of postgraduate study? What do you want to be in the future? To achieve your ideal goal, what should you do during postgraduate study? Taking Meng Wanzhou’s return to China as an example, Mr. Ma encouraged students to take on new missions in the new era and understand China’s real problems, be courageous, down-to-earth, innovative, and do academic research that is truly beneficial to our country, all families and the people.
2. Party class: holding firm ideal and faith and inheriting the “red gene”
Mr. Qu Yuanli, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, asked all students to set up lofty ideals and live up to the ardent expectations of the people. He also encouraged students to make plans for life, including mid-term goals and long-term goals, and pursue an all-round moral, intellectual, physical, and aesthetic development with the spirit of hard work. He urged the students to love and remember the motherland wherever they go. Mr. Qu concluded the lecture with a warm welcome to the students to join the Party organization, understand the policies of the Party and the country, ride the tide of the times, and improve self-cultivation.
3. Lesson for fire safety: abiding by fire protection laws and regulations and creating a safe campus
An Zhicheng, chief of the Fire Protection Division of Xinmin Medical College, gave a lively and wonderful fire safety training to the 2021 graduate students of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, equipping the students with the basic knowledge and skills of firefighting, with special emphasis on the laboratory fire safety and technical specifications. With real-life examples, Mr. An showed students that safety cannot be ensured by wait, one can only live once, and everyone is responsible for improving the quality of firefighting. Through this lecture on fire safety knowledge, all students enhanced their safety awareness, further understood the danger and ruthlessness of fire, and became clearer about self-rescue and escape methods. Also, the students paid more attention to thermal power safety in daily life, for themselves and the safety and happiness of others.
4. Lesson for laboratory safety - keeping safety in mind and the success of experiments in hand
Mr. Zhang Xiliang, environmental safety supervisor and expert, gave a detailed introduction to the healthy development and safety of the university, laboratory safety, and the significance of ensuring laboratory safety and the laboratory safety work in the school. Mr. Zhang said that the healthy development and security of schools are high on the national agenda and the social livelihood of the people, and that everyone should make their own share of contribution to campus security. Mr. Zhang also noted that campus safety involves a wide range of work and is difficult to handle, and that because of scattered campuses and sound development of various disciplines, laboratory safety also involves multiple risk points and safety hazards. For this reason, ensuring laboratory safety is an important and responsibility-laden task as laboratory safety is the prerequisite for safety on campus. Laboratory is the place where teachers and students carry out teaching, experiments, scientific research practices and training, as well as other activities. It is also an important platform to help students grow, and educate and train them. It is of paramount significance to follow laboratory regulations and remember national laws and regulations, industry regulations and school safety system.
5. Lesson for mental health: embracing a positive attitude to realize your dream
Ms. Zhu Liya, deputy director of the Student Mental Health Guidance Center, shared with students how to cope with pressure and adjust their cognition. To maintain a positive and peaceful state of mind, students should learn to adjust their mindset, talk to others, and seek “off-site support” when they encounter difficulties. The mental health care team of Jilin University aims to provide students with professional, systematic, accurate and warm mental health guidance services.
6. Lesson for scientific ethics: correcting academic attitude and conducting good scientific research
Professor Liu Ya from the School of Public Health introduced the specific contents of scientific misconduct with real-life cases, asking students to follow academic norms and resist academic misconduct. Academic ethics and academic character will not only affect students’ study and research in the school, but also have a formative impact on their life even if they may not embark on the path of scientific research in the future.
7. Lesson for postgraduate training: cultivating all-rounded students as a new mode of talent training
Professor Wang Yi, deputy dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences put forward several questions to the new students as to what to learn, how to learn and what to do at the postgraduate stage when they encounter problems, pointing out the direction of postgraduate life. It is hoped that all graduate students should always be firm in their belief, faith and confidence to create historical achievements. Mr. Wang also expressed the hope that students can both realize their personal growth and contribute to national development based on real needs, and bravely shoulder the mission and responsibility of postgraduates in the new era. Mr. Wang hoped every graduate student to base his/her mind on contemporary China, look to the wider world, study for the country, practice skills for the people, and be a pioneer and devotee in the forefront of the times, guided by the philosophy of “patriotism, motivation, truth-seeking, practice”.
With the education program, students have cleared their confusion as to their previous doubts and questions, and familiarized themselves with relevant rules and regulations, as well as future academic and career development direction. The year 2021 marked the centenary of the Communist Party of China and the 75th anniversary of the founding of Jilin University and it is hoped that hope students of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences can constantly improve their backbone, ambition and confidence against this background, set sail, ride the wind and waves, and achieve success.
