About Jilin University School of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Jilin University School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (JLUSPS) is located at Xinmin Campus of Jilin University, with a floor area of 8,000 square meters. Formerly known as the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences, it was founded in 1998 by a group of prestigious scientists and educators including Professor Xu Jingda, a famous natural medicine chemist. The school started its undergraduate programs in pharmaceutical sciences in the same year. In 2000, the former Jilin University, the former Jilin University of Technology, the former Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences, the former Changchun University of Science and Technology , and the former Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications merged into the current Jilin University, and the school was renamed as Jilin University School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. In June 2021, the undergraduate program in biomedical engineering (regenerative medicine) of Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences was transferred into the JLUSPS. In 2013, it launched another new 5-year undergraduate program, clinical pharmacy. After 16 years of development, JLUSPS has made great progress in creating complete systems of discipline development, talent training, academic innovation, and social service, with a well-structured team of academic leaders and researchers. In fields of medicinal chemistry, natural medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmacy, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine, it has achieved significant results. Currently, JLUSPS has built itself into a powerhouse in pharmaceutical sciences with distinctive characteristics and excellent teaching and research conditions.

There are currently 137 faculty members, including 32 professors (26 doctoral supervisors) and 31 associate professors. The proportion of teachers with graduate education backgrounds amounts to 97% of the total. There are 944 students at the school. The admissions policy annually includes 150 undergraduates, 70 postgraduates, and 20 doctoral students.

The school has 4 departments, 4 experiment & teaching centers for undergraduates , 4 key laboratories under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 7 key laboratories (engineering centers) of Jilin Province, and 3 joint laboratories established in partnership with enterprises. JLUSPS offers 3 undergraduate programs in pharmaceutical sciences, clinical pharmacy, and biomedical engineering (regenerative medicine), 4 doctoral programs, 5 master’s degree programs, 1 mobile station for postdoctoral research, and 1 professional master’s program in pharmaceutical sciences. Pharmaceutical sciences and biomedical engineering are selected as the key disciplines in the 12th Five-Year Plan of Jilin Province. Its pharmaceutical experiment center and bioengineering experiment & teaching center are provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers.

As for talent training, the school strives for the “trinity” of knowledge, skills, and values. The three undergraduate programs have jointly created a “fundamental + applied” talent training mode, which has cultivated and provided a large number of excellent pharmaceutical talents for the world. JLUSPS pays close attention to improving students’ comprehensive quality, innovative and practical ability. To do so, the school values the interplay between scientific research and teaching and integrates the latest research achievements into teaching to broaden students’ horizons. Meanwhile, an expansive spectrum of extracurricular activities is held to enrich their lives and improve their overall abilities to meet the needs of the times and social development, making significant achievements. The proportion of students pursuing master’s degrees has been increasing every year, and the employment rate sees steady growth. The graduates have been admitted by famous universities worldwide, including the University of New Mexico, University of Edinburgh, Columbia University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Queen’s University, Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Fudan University. The approval of the students from these universities, research institutes, and internationally renowned pharmaceutical enterprises have earned the school great reputations.

Fruitful outcomes have been delivered in scientific research since the school’s establishment. The school has undertaken numerous research programs including Key Projects in the National Science & Technology Pillar Program , 863 Program projects, 973 Program projects, National Natural Science Fund projects, “Special Research Fund for Doctoral Programs in Institutions of Higher Education ” projects, and provincial scientific research projects. Basic research and development of new drugs have been carried out centering around malignant tumors, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, diabetes, and other major refractory diseases. Much has been accomplished in basic and applied research of medicinal chemistry, natural medicine chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacy, pharmaceutical analysis and pharmacokinetics, biopharmacy , stem cell, tissue engineering, etc. The development of traditional Chinese and natural medicine, chemical medicine, therapeutic biologics, and some other drugs has evidenced that the school has made remarkable achievements in transforming research results. Many of them have won second place in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, first place in the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, and many other awards at the provincial and ministerial level. Additionally, a noteworthy number of articles have been published in core journals and included in SCI and EI. To better meet the needs of the society and enhance the academic development of disciplines, JLUSPS has signed contracts with several local governments, universities, and research institutes on establishing joint teaching & application bases, and co-founded National Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Industrialization Alliance, and National Biomedical International Innovation Park Industry-University-Research Alliance. In addition, cooperation in various forms has been conducted with large domestic pharmaceutical enterprises.

In recent years, JLUSPS has been actively engaged in international exchanges and cooperation. The school has maintained extensive contact and partnership with universities in the United States, Canada, Britain, Japan, and other countries. Every year, excellent teachers and students are selected for international and domestic exchange programs to world-renowned universities and research institutions.

Looking to the future, JLUSPS will carry forward the spirit of diligence while improving the conditions of education and scientific research, adhere to the concepts of developing the school with the discipline as the foundation, academic research as the engine, and students as the focus. With a pragmatic and ambitious attitude, we endeavor to draw on the strengths of all and seize the opportunities for development. In pursuit of innovative scientific research, high-quality talents, and better social services, further efforts will be made to promote the talent training, discipline development, scientific research, and other aspects of the school in an all-round manner, striving to build a high-level, first-class, and research-oriented School of Pharmaceutical Sciences!
